BACK TO LOCAL MEDIA
“I have the feeling that you are letting technical issues slow you down too much.”
- external IT employee in a local media meeting, translated from German
Today, innovation is a buzzword that first needs to be filled with content. Everyone wants to be innovative, but not everyone succeeds. This is also because for many it is inconceivable to combine the innovative moment with an old-fashioned technology. Or ideas are there, but the fear of implementation is holding them back (as in the quote above). Nevertheless, many local media manage to become innovative or continue to be so.
The Jungfrau Zeitung, for example, has completely dispensed with the printed version of its newspaper, but still produces an e-paper from the online articles, which is graphically sophisticated and is well received by readers. Bajour has revitalized the newsletter with its Basel Briefing. Other local media are venturing into new financing methods, such as tsüri.ch with crowdfunding. More radical transformations in the direction of innovation can be found at Radio Ticino, which has installed a new radio computer program where everything important for the station comes together (advertising, timeslots, etc.). Ergo: There are many areas in which you can be innovative. Do not be afraid to try out and implement ideas – and to discontinue them if they do not work (although innovations should always be given some time to be accepted and used). This costs money and is sometimes an uncertain investment. However, various foundations offer to finance individual innovations. The public foundation Innosuisse offers the opportunity to develop an innovation with a university and have part of the costs financed. Finally, there are possibilities to deduct innovation development costs from taxes.
