BACK TO LOCAL MEDIA
“Artificial intelligence, AI, may in the future allow us to focus more on in-depth or investigative reporting than the work we can currently do with the editorial staff we have available. In any case, any use of AI will always require verification on our part, on the part of the journalists. The editorial guideline that I have developed together with the management is clear: we want to prioritize everything that has to do with current affairs and regional reporting.”
- Editor at Radio Ticino, translated from Italian
AI methods are older than the current hype would suggest. With ChatGPT etc., however, programs have been created that enable low threshold to use for everyone. In the field of local media, AI methods offer new possibilities: Stock footage, for example, can be created easily and cheaply, texts can be supplemented with videos or read aloud in local dialect. However, all AI methods must be used with caution and monitoring. Try out new AI methods and evaluate them. In which areas (perhaps also marketing, process optimization, creation of infographics, etc.) does an AI method help you? Despite all the openness towards AI, it is important that you always make it transparent whether and in which area AI methods have been used. Also bear in mind that you should not use sensitive data for AI methods that is not anonymized, that ChatGPT does not (yet) work with real-time information, that AI methods are susceptible to bias and that AI methods can produce hallucinations (results that appear correct but are incorrect).
You can also accompany the testing of new AI methods journalistically and make your findings available to media users as a service (as a kind of clarification and test, as watson.ch does with AI-generated images).
