BACK TO LOCAL MEDIA

“We discuss topics and news to be developed together in editorial meetings, and the discussion is open and democratic. Every journalist has a point of view, which can be different. It’s not like I arrive and say: do this, do that. I always try to think about current events together with the team to find out the best way to present a story. In the end, of course, I decide, that’s my job.”
  • Editor-in-chief at Radio Ticino, translated from Italian
Particularly since many local media work with numerous freelancers, it is especially important to promote cohesion within the media company. Teams that get on well together also work well together. It is important to create a sense of unity, even with home office, part-time workers and journalists who often work outside the office, in the local area. A poor working atmosphere increases the risk of high staff turnover, which always means a loss of resources (knowledge, time for training new employees).

Examples:
  • At the Jungfrau Zeitung a large meeting is held once a month with all journalists from the entire catchment area of the medium. This is followed by a brunch for the whole team – to exchange ideas, discuss content and promote team building.
  • At RTR there is a big online meeting in the morning where everyone reports on what they are currently working on (online, radio, social media). This also reveals potential synergies that could be exploited and promotes a sense of community among those who work in completely various parts of the canton of Graubünden and speak different Romansh idioms.
