BACK TO LOCAL MEDIA

Through research on local media throughout Switzerland and in neighboring countries, the research team of this research project[2] repeatedly found that many local media outlets produce high-quality work. At the same time, each medium offers the possibility of making individual, simple adjustments to further improve the product. An outside perspective by people who are not part of the organization is often helpful for this. Sporadic advice (Grubenmann & Weber, 2022, p. 32), a review by the public, researchers or students can all be helpful as well. New employees or interns can also be involved in this: They can be asked at the start of their employment and again after a few weeks which features of the company and its work processes have struck them positively or negatively, where they see potential for optimization or for which areas they have innovative ideas. A breath of fresh air helps you to regain a more complete perspective again.

Examples:
  • Establishment of an external quality commission with experts, which regularly evaluates the journalistic content and discusses it with the editor-in-chief, such as the program quality assurance commission at Telebasel
  • Project-related cooperation with experts at universities, example: observation of the ZDF editorial team “Kulturzeit”, virtual participation in editorial meetings and program criticism with subsequent implementation of individual suggestions.[3]
  • Establishment of a readers’ advisory board at the Berliner Morgenpost: readers can apply to give regular feedback on the product to the editor-in-chief
