Rethink the financing of new IT systems

BACK TO LOCAL MEDIA

The digitalization of previously analogue products or the further development of digital offerings requires major IT investments. The costs of IT work for local media should always be carefully considered. As many resources as possible should be invested in journalistic work and not in IT or administration. It must be weighed up what makes more sense for a local medium: covering all the technical work with internal IT staff or purchasing working time and products from IT companies? The former may often seem cheaper at first glance but can turn out to be a financial or personnel mistake, as the internal IT department will be overburdened by the further development of digital products. This could, in turn, lead to the need to hire more employees who are not journalists and cause additional expenses, or delay the launch of a new product, which, depending on the company’s communication, could be detrimental to the brand.

One promising solution could be collaboration in the non-journalistic sector. For example, the We.Publish foundation provides a technological infrastructure freely accessible as an open-source project that can be adapted to one’s individual needs. This makes it possible to share the IT costs among all companies using the tool. The combination of this foundation and direct access format guarantee that no media company can dominate the other companies by controlling the IT.
