BACK TO LOCAL MEDIA

“As a career changer, you usually have three months of training at the headquarters. This is in Chur and you get to know all the editorial offices. The aim is to learn the craft of a reporter, which at the beginning is mainly the designed reports. However, you also get an insight into all other forms of radio journalism. You can’t practice everything in detail, but you get a three-month crash course in journalism. And then you go to the region and mainly report on current affairs that are happening there. That’s because that’s what you’ve practiced the most. All the other forms of reporting come later.”

While local media across Switzerland are struggling with the poaching of their notable talent by larger media houses, they should reconsider new ways of acquiring employees. Entry-level positions should be created for career changers. The skills that new employees bring with them should ideally be integrated into the editorial team. For example, Bajour decided to include a new employee’s podcast under the Bajour brand. Another option is to retain talented freelancers and one day take them on as employees.
